The conception and design of the ventilation system are essential for every tunnelling project. They have to be defined at an early stage, since the system chosen considerably affects the design of the tunnel cross-section, the number and size of ventilation shafts and the land consumption. In road tunnels, the ventilation systems have to meet three main objectives: firstly, they provide the tunnel tubes with enough fresh air under normal traffic conditions (free-flowing, stop-and-go and congested); secondly, they minimise the amount of smoke in the tubes and near the escape ways in case of fire, and thirdly, they avoid excessive pollution by the tunnel air discharge in the area of the tunnel mouth. Long rail tunnels or subway systems as well require a ventilation system that keeps the operating temperature and the humidity on the correct level during normal operation and reduces the diffusion of smoke gases in emergency situations to create safe, smoke-free escape ways for the passengers. Our specialists assist you in all issues of tunnel safety and ventilation, from the creation of concepts and designs for ventilation systems, the simulation of scenarios, the dimensioning of components and the creation of expertises to the coordination and supervision of installation works and the commissioning of complex ventilation systems. |
