Pöyry awarded engineering services assignment by SIG for the design and execution of WWTP Aïre 2+

SIG (Services Industriels de Genève) has awarded Pöyry as part of the consortium Team 2+ with the engineering services assignment for the design and execution of the WWTP Aïre 2+ in Geneva, Switzerland. The contract includes the extension of the biological treatment stage and a new construction of a treatment unit to eliminate micropollutants.

Every day, SIG ensures the basic supply of energy, water, wastewater, waste and heat for the Greater Geneva Area. SIG is committed to the development of a sustainable and connected society and is oriented towards future and innovation. Following the commissioning of the extension, the Geneva wastewater treatment plant will be the largest wastewater treatment plant in Switzerland with a capacity of 1’000’000 population equivalents for 24 communities in the Canton and the neighboring communities in France, as well as commercial and industrial enterprises.

The consortium Team 2+, consisting of the engineering and consulting companies BG, Pöyry and CCHE, was selected for the expansion of the plant and commissioned with the design and site supervision during the construction and installation phase.

In order to treat the future wastewater loads in the growing catchment area and at the same time reduce the nutrient load in the Rhone, the overloaded biofiltration plant has to be expanded. In addition, organic trace substances from pesticides, medicines and daily care products (micropollutants) will in future be eliminated from wastewater by a new treatment stage. The heat from the wastewater is recovered and used to heat the surrounding households as part of Geneva's Smart City strategy.

Thomas Morgenthaler, member of the Pöyry management board, on the project:

«We are proud to be working on this lighthouse project together with our partners and SIG and to further expand our excellent position in the field of innovative process technologies in wastewater treatment in western Switzerland. With SIG, we are working for a customer who shares our vision for sustainability and innovation. We are looking forward to the realization of the largest wastewater treatment plant in Switzerland.»
