With the founding of the Swiss Chapter, the world's most important professional association of fire protection engineers is being established for the first time in German-speaking countries. The aim of the professional group is to promote engineering and performance-based fire protection in Switzerland by improving the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment. The Swiss associations VKF, SIA and SSI support the establishment and expansion of the "SFPE Switzerland" professional group in Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Andrea Frangi, professor and chairman of the Institute for Structural Analysis and Design, presented the core of fire protection in his keynote speech:

Fire safety is not primarily a question of building material but of concept.

In cooperation with ETH Zurich, a MAS is being developed to ensure the training of the next generation of fire protection engineers. With this offer, ETH Zurich is one of the few tertiary educational institutes in the world that focuses specifically on engineering science in the areas of fire dynamics, fire protection planning, structural and technical fire protection and human behaviour in the event of a fire.

Pöyry Switzerland Ltd. is proud to host the opening ceremony for the Swiss Chapter. With its many years of experience and tradition in classic underground construction, Pöyry has a wide range of competencies in safety & security, fire protection, communication & control technology, ventilation & mechanics as well as simulation. With this background, Pöyry is an ideal interface between tertiary education and the market application of newly developed technical methods to reduce the negative consequences of fires.
