In addition to the large hydropower plants that stand out due to their impressive dams and weirs, small hydropower stations also use hydropower to generate electrical power. Small hydropower plants work on the same principle as large hydropower plants. They differ mainly in the performance class. In Europe, systems with a performance of up to 10 MW are described as small hydropower plants. About 10 per cent of all Swiss hydroelectric power generation is supplied by small hydropower plants nowadays.
Pöyry is very familiar with the specific requirements for the construction or conversion of small power stations and in this respect can draw on long-standing practical experience gained in Switzerland and abroad.
